Accelerated Reader General Info

Accelerated Reader (AR) is reading management software. AR provides teachers with an easy and effective way to monitor all forms of guided reading practice. Read on to learn more about AR and take a look at the short Power Point explaining the simple steps of how to use AR

Accelerated Reader helps you focus attention on careful reading of books, which improves students’ critical-thinking skills and builds an intrinsic love of reading.

Using AR, you can continuously guide students to appropriate books and curriculum within their zone of proximal development (ZPD).

Research shows that AR helps students raise scores on state tests and ensure mastery of standards.

How it works:

Accelerated Reader's three easy steps help us continuously guide students to appropriate books within their zone of proximal development (ZPD). At the same time, it helps teachers personalize reading instruction and intervene with students who need extra help. Instructor receives reports on the reading level and comprehension skills of each student to guide instruction and help the student select more reading materials.

Simply put:  Read a book.  Take a quiz.  Read another book.

Each AR book is assigned a ZPD and points for difficulty.  The higher the reading level the more points value the book.  The lower the ZPD the lower the points value per book.  For example if a student’s ZPD is say 2.5-4.6 the books they books in this range will be smaller and have less value in points requiring the student to read more books.  If a student’s ZPD is 5.5-7.8 the reading skill level is higher and the books will be more challenging, denser, and take longer to complete, hence the higher points value as said student will most likely read less in quantity of books than the student with a lower ZPD.,

To determine your student’s ZPD they will be tested using AR’s STAR program, after which they will be sent home with a book marked with the AR sticker.

Students should be reading each evening, recording in the Reading Log is an additional requirement built into Mr. Joyet’s class. Once the AR book is complete the student can take the quiz, in the library or any terminal on campus.  Once they student has successfully completed the quiz, they can move onto the next AR book.

The following is information each student shall receive after testing and should retain for reference:
